Summary
The Proxicam Pedestrian Detection System utilizes highly customizable, virtual proximity zones to monitor exclusion areas around industrial machinery. By configuring precise spatial boundaries, safety managers can ensure operators receive accurate, multi-staged alerts when a pedestrian breaches a high-risk area. These zones are fully adaptable to specific machine footprints, operational tasks, and site safety requirements.
System Features and Functions
Optical Coverage and Range
- Ultra-Wide Field of View:
Each Proxicam camera is equipped with a 1.99mm fisheye lens, delivering a 170º viewing angle to maximise visibility. - Detection Distances:
The AI can distinguish human forms up to 20m away. However, the optimum calibrated detection distance is between 0.5m and 10m from the camera, and up to 8m wide across the camera's face (varying slightly with installation height and angle). - 360º Monitoring:
Up to four cameras can be installed together to provide total all-around perimeter detection.
Zone Geometric Patterns
The NPU edge-computing algorithms support multiple zone shapes to fit diverse machine profiles:
- Horizontal:
The standard configuration, which can be tailored into square, rectangular, or trapezoidal footprints. - Semi-Circle:
An arc-shaped pattern radiating outward from the lens, ideally suited for the rear geometry of forklifts and skid steers. - Vertical:
Creates a long, narrow detection corridor running parallel alongside a machine or haul truck. - Free Draw:
Removes predefined geometric constraints, allowing technicians to map highly irregular custom shapes.
Multi-Staged Zone Configuration
Safety managers can configure layered zones (Green, Yellow, and Red) within a single camera feed to create escalating priority alerts.
- Green Zone:
The outermost perimeter, generating a baseline alert interval. - Yellow Zone:
The intermediate perimeter, generating an accelerated alert interval. - Red Zone:
The critical proximity perimeter, generating a fast-frequency alert interval and triggering automated event video logging. - Note: Multi-staged zone escalation is only supported when paired with the Proxicam LCD Monitor (PXLCD). Installations utilizing the Detection Indicator (PXLED) operate as single exclusion zones.
Dynamic and Conditional Zone Muting
When the system is integrated with the Proxicam Enhancement Box (PXE), detection zones can dynamically adapt to the machine's state:
- FWD/REV Dynamic Detection:
Alerts and output triggers are actively muted for cameras opposing the machine's direction of travel to reduce operator alert fatigue (e.g., rear zones are muted while driving forward). - Safe-to-Approach:
All zone detection events are actively suppressed when the machine's park brake or hard lockout is engaged, facilitating authorized pedestrian interaction.
Installation/Usage: Zone Calibration Process
Detection zones must be manually calibrated during initial setup using the web-based Proxicam Configuration App, accessed via the USBCAL WiFi dongle.
- Prepare the Physical Site:
Place physical cones or other marker on the ground around the machine at the exact distances required for your site's exclusion zones. - Access the Interface:
Log into the Configuration App and navigate to the Detection Zone Setup menu. - Enable Zones:
Toggle the Active Zones switches (Green / Yellow / Red) to ON. - Select Geometry:
Use the drop-down menu to select the required Zone Shape. To build a custom shape, toggle Drag Freely to ON. - Align Coordinates:
Using the live video feed on your device, touch and drag the colored on-screen zone lines until they precisely outline the physical cones or other marker you placed on the ground. - Save Configuration:
Click Apply to commit the spatial coordinates to the camera's memory.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
A pedestrian is clearly standing in the camera's view, but the system is not issuing a detection alert.
The AI system will only register a detection event if the pedestrian breaches the precise spatial boundary defined by your calibrated zones. The system cannot detect people outside of these configured zones, even if they are highly visible in the camera frame. Re-access the Detection Zone Setup menu and drag your zone perimeters outward to ensure adequate operational coverage.
The multi-staged escalating alarms (Green, Yellow, Red) are not functioning; I only receive one continuous alert tone.
Multi-staged zone alerting is an exclusive feature of the Proxicam LCD Monitor (PXLCD). If your machine is equipped with the compact Detection Indicator (PXLED), the hardware is restricted to single-zone exclusion alerts and will not increase in frequency as a pedestrian moves closer.
I cannot manipulate the on-screen lines to wrap tightly around my machine's counterweight.
Ensure the Drag Freely toggle is set to ON in the Configuration App. This function removes the locked geometry of standard rectangles or semi-circles, allowing you to drag individual corner anchor points to create an irregular, custom-fit polygon.
